The Land of Roses
Founded in the 7th century, the Republic of Bulgaria is one of the oldest federations in Europe, with a history facing a lot of ups and downs. After being overruled by Ottoman Turks it regained its independence, to turn into a Communist state shortly afterwards, finally becoming a member of the European Union in 2007. Often transversed by different ethnic groups, because of its crucial location near the ‘Silk Road’, creating a unique region. On top of all this it also has the honour to encompass the mountain range whereafter the Balkan Peninsula is named.
Towns such as Sofia, Plovid and Varna, known for their festive atmosphere, attract a lot of tourists in summer. On the other hand there are numerous lesser known historic villages, inhabited solely by warm-hearted locals welcoming you for an afternoon filled with rakija and grilled bbq. Although communication in English will be a little bit too amibitous (and thus forcing you to use body language to express yourself), these will be the best conversations you will ever make.
Embracing three National Parks, each one offering you a diverse set of hiking possibilities, Bulgaria accomodates both the beginner and the advanced hiker. If you prefer more manageable hikes while gazing at sheperds placidly climbing the montane slopes you can make for the Central Balkan Mountains. They offer a wide range of wonderful hiking opportunities, from Kozya Stena to a two-day hike to the Botev Peak and the Raisko Praskalo waterfall. The more famous hikes are to be found in the Southwestern region, more specifically the Rila and Pirin Mountains, each rising respectively to 2925 metres at the Musala Peak, and 2914 metres at Vihren Peak. Traversing the (un)marked paths in an area containing more than a thousand shimmering glacial lakes, arising from higher glaciers, you will feel alive and kicking. The Seven Rila Lakes hike, the Musala Summit, the Vihren Peak, or a hike that doesn’t have to waver for the Hobbit-setting, these are just a handful of options.
