A TRAVERSE OF THE PYRENEES: GR11

By Julia Van Peer
"The ultimate dream of many hikers: crossing the Pyrenees on foot."

There are 3 long-distance paths that run through the Pyrenees: the GR10, the GR11 or the Haute Randonnée. The GR10 covers about 900 km on the French side of the mountain range, mainly consists of moderate sections and has an Atlantic climate. The GR11, on the other hand, consists of slightly more challenging sections over a length of 820 kilometres, and you will rarely be surprised by bad weather. Then there's the Haute Randonnée Pyrénée, which follows the main ridge of the Pyrenees, regularly crossing the border between Spain and France.

The three routes are all unique and require a certain basic experience with the mountains before setting out. They all connect the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean and cross several fantastic nature reserves and National Parks. You will be crossing open rugged landscapes, climbing towering peaks above 2000 meters, descending into steep and deep valleys, and cooling down in the magical oak forests.

WHEN? In general, it is recommended to undertake this journey between the end of spring and the beginning of autumn. More specifically, the months of May to September. Keep in mind that although it may be the middle of the summer, there is certainly still snow and ice to be found on the trails. Therefore some experience with hiking is required when embarking on the trail. Read my article on general notes in the mountains for more tips.

HOW LONG? The GR11 route consists o 47 stages, starting in Irun and running until Cadaques. Count between … and … days/weeks to finish the entire trail.

MARKINGS? GR routes have the same kind of markings all over Europe, namely the well-known red and white stripes. Of course it wouldn't be an adventurous route if there were not a few missing markers here and there, but in that case hiking apps are a handy alternative. However, on most segments of the routes you will find clear markings.

Although I have not yet had the chance to walk the GR11 route in its entirety, I had the opportunity to conquer parts of it. Below are some of the sections I've undertaken, either incorporated into a two-day hike or turned into a loop. Discover some beautiful sections below.
