The Balkans
“Entangled between Western and Eastern Europe, the Balkan carries a rich history. Above all it is the most undiscovered authentic region of Europe.“
Ex-Yugoslavia may not be the most obvious travel choice with the media focusing mainly on its red history, whereas the Balkan Peninsula sounds very attractive with its remote and mostly undiscovered nature. One could almost be surprised they overlap each other greatly in geographical terms. A shared communist-minded history may dominate the past, the present couldn’t be more opposed. The now independent nations offer unique flavors and distinct differences in every aspect of life. The Balkan provides you with off the beaten tracks, ancient villages and stunning landscapes, creating a very authentic atmosphere.
Geographically, The Balkans include Albania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro, and Bosnia i Herzegovina in a whole. While parts of Greece, Croatia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, and Turkey are also included in the lot. The six countries that make up ex-Yugoslavia are Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Slovenia.
From Serbia’s fairy-tale winter landscapes, to enjoying autumn vibes in Bulgaria. From losing your heart to the Macedonian people, to venturing off in the Land of Eagles. From ancient bridge after bridge in Bosnia I Herzegovina, to Europe’s youngest member Kosovo. From the highest peaks to the Adriatic Sea in Montenegro, to the most impressive mountainscape of all, the Julian Alps in Slovenia.
During my 7 months overland travel by van, I explored 8 unique Balkan countries and I can assure you they will conquer your heart in no-time. Be open minded and never forget to cherish every moment.
